Green Book (2018) Movie Review

Green Book (2018) Review

Hello guys and welcome back to Movie Reviews #100%, the place where you can be nerdy about movies! So, I have said I will do a review for this movie and, bloody hell, I am going to do it!

I know that this movie has had a bit of a backlash, especially after the Golden Globes but, if you can put aside that for a second, which you should, you can enjoy this movie because it is a movie that should be enjoyed, if you haven't already.

A bit of a synopsis for you lot, if you haven't seen it yet: Dr. Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist who's about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.

So, it has some very sensitive plot points but director Pete Farelly knows how to approach the sensitive subject with a deft touch and knows how to take advantage of his two amazing lead actors, who have an incredible chemistry together.

This movie is more than a smooth road trip movie, it's a testimony of friendship and how a relationship, such as that, between two unlikely people, can transcend race and class boundaries in an era where race equality was much less than it is today. At the same time, it's breaking boundaries and, also, changes the view on how we see each other.

One negative that I can point out is that the movie, albeit having the title ''Green Book'', it does not explain much about what it actually is and what it is used for. Plus, it seems that Dr. Shirley is not the main character of the movie but Tony Lip is because it's more of his story than the doctor's.

About the book, if you did not know, was created by mail carrier Victor Hugo Green, detailed the restaurants, stores, beauty shops, hotels, and private "tourist homes" (in the case of small towns that had no hotels available to Black people) that were welcoming to Black travelers. Green Books also helped travelers avoid "sundown towns," which had laws prohibiting Black people from being on the road at night. By carrying a Green Book, Black travelers were able to avoid embarrassment and danger. It was a travesty but, fortunately, the movie is aware of that.

Overall, if you can look past it's little flaws and controversies, you can find a nice story about two people that create a long lasting friendship, filled with emotion, humor, drama, heart and great performances. 8.2/10

OK guys, that is my review for this one. Coming soon, review for both the ''Unfriended'' movies and ''Glass''. Until then, take care, stay movie nerdy and keep on reviewing!
