Skyscraper (2018) Movie Review

Skyscraper (2018) Review

Hello guys and welcome back to Movie Talks with Tudor! Well, after The Darkest Minds and The Meg, here is another movie that borrows or uses the same elements from past movies but with a different twist and in a different package. But at it's core, it is the same story.

Where The Darkest Minds borrowed from the X-Men movies and other YA adaptations and The Meg borrowed from the other shark movies that came before it, this one is mixing elements from Towering Inferno and, obviously, Die Hard. Well, I can tell you that this concept did not work for me, at least. It has some potential to be a good action/thriller movie but it kinda falls short on the action and thriller part. And, any other part, for the matter.

The casting is great, The Rock is as awesome as ever and it's very nice to see Neve Campbell in a movie again. Unfortunately, the cast in not enough to make this a solid stand out from the other movies in this particular genre. It's full of the genre's cliches, it's predictable, all of the time, some of the dialogue does not work, the script is not doing the movie any favors, putting the hero in situations that you know he is gonna come out, safe and sound. There is no drama, no standing of the edge of your seat type of thing. Plus, what is with the whole duct tape phase? Apparently I was watching a one hour and a half commercial for duct tape. At least, put a company name on that duct tape, so I can consider it product placement.

The actions scenes are fairly good, although not as many as I thought but the low point of the movie, for me, was the final scene, in the third act, when they are fighting on the roof, with those panels. That whole scene looks awful. The CGI looks bad and cheap, more suited for a Sharknado movie than one from a big studio like Universal.

Overall, this was a missed opportunity for me but you can be your own judge and jury. And, if you want, the executioner as well. 5.5/10

OK guys, that is my review for this. Next up, a movie that I did not like and, it's another overdue one. Until then, take care and keep on reviewing!
