The Magnificent Seven (2016) Movie Review

The Magnificent Seven (2016) Review

So we got another remake but this time it's good. It's actually not a remake, it's a re-remake because the one from the 1960 was a remake for the 1954 "Seven Samurais" from the legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. You don't have to like either of these two movies, but I strongly recommend all three of them, to enjoy this one. It does not live up to it's title and it does not top the original but it is a very entertaining action western that stands on its one. If you have seen the classic from the 1960 you will recognize a few lines and, undoubtedly, the famous theme song. The action is great, the final showdown is a delight, the cast is excellent with great performances from each one but the stand outs were Chris Pratt, Denzel Washington and Vincent D'Onofrio. Director Antoine Fuqua, who collaborate with Washington for the excellent "Training Day" and "The Equalizer", brings a modern touch to this classic. It will appeal to new viewers as well for those who loved the original. To make a good remake, you don't have to make the exact same movie, just keep a few things from the original and give it your own vision and that's exactly the case here. It is not a perfect movie but it is a good fun, a good action movie and a good modern western. For "Seven Samurais" I would give a 10/10 because is well crafted and well executed for that time, for the 1960 original I would give a 9.5/10 because it has great characters, great villain and it's a classic. Also I would like to add that the humor and comedy of this movie is perfect, it is not exaggerated and it's a good laughter. The villain starts off strong but by the end he becomes a generic one. With that said I would surely recommend multiple viewings for this one. 8.5/10
